I think the Golf looks better than the Mazda 3 hatchback
The Mazda is beautiful but I just prefer the simplicity of the Golf’s looks. ¯\_()_/¯

Um, this is just a bad opinion

Yeah, my wife says the same thing...

I still love the Mk7 Golf’s looks

Agreed

Agreed. So much so that I bought a Golf (GTI).
I’ve posted about it before.

The Golf is roomier inside and it’s just shaped like it would have more space.

She sounds like a keeper

So how’s the accounting business treating you?

Wow! You almost kinda got my job right! I’m a financial specialist for an international brokerage firm! Stay out of my head!

Now I’m a big Mazda fan, but I have to agree with you. The Golf just looks a bit better balanced and elegant in its simplicity, whereas the Mazda has some odd proportions, kind of like a BMW clown shoe.
I drive a Mazda5 6MT, which most people say isn’t exactly a great looking vehicle (especially compared to the first generation), but if I had to replace it I’d buy the Mazda3 just based on my past experiences with VW/BMW/MB/Porsche, looks be damned.

Just too bad it’s not so simple on the inside :p
I don’ trust VW at all in terms of reliability

I’ll give you that - the golf is nice looking and it is less stylized which is usually a good thing. A bit more room in the Golf too.

I agree.
Then again, the Golf looks better than anything else I can think of in the class that isn’t a luxury car.

I actually don’t like the styling of the 3 at all. The Golf is probably the best looking FWD 5-door, but I’d put the 3 at pretty much the bottom. Funny thing is, I love the styling of the rest of Mazda’s lineup, just not the 3.

you know, I like german cars, and I would say I like 90 percent of what the germans put out there today, I’m sure plenty will disagree with me

I’ve always loved their clean simplicity, nothing over done or exaggerated.

I hadn’t thought about it until now but the Golf is definitely up there for me for non luxury cars in terms of looks.

Did you specifically select that spud-rific color to accentuate the 3's potatoeness or did it just work out that way?

Hahaha, I actually just picked the first good quality picture. I don’t hate the brown but can’t unsee potato now that you’ve said that

I agree the Golf looks better, but if I was going to buy one or the other, I’ll take the Mazda.

I’m less on the Mazda hype train than many others here in spite of, or perhaps because of, having owned two Mazdas in the past. One of which was a 2006 Mazdaspeed 6 that was a never-ending losing battle against rust. But while Mazdas make me say “meh,” nothing makes me say “go fuck yourself” like a VW. I hate them, completely irrationally, but I hate them nonetheless.

I like the 3, but I kinda agree with you here. It’s definitely due for an update and the Golf is overall a more cohesive design.
Definitely the 3's best angle:

I like straight lines, soo ... I think the Mazda is pig ugly and the Golf is righteous.

+1.

they’re both meh.

I’m with you on this. I think the Mazda 6 is great looking car, but the Mazda 3's proportions are off. I think the Cruze hatch looks better than either, too bad its stuck with that turd of an engine.

Yes

It looks like they actually started with a very elegant design, then decided to add some “dramatic flare”.

I kind of hate the golf and I generally respect the Mazda, but personally i find the Mazda 3 to be one of the uglier cars out there, while I think the MKVII Golf executes hatchback styling better than just about any car on the road. Hate or no, its a fantastic looking car.

I think its an architect-thing. The Golf just has such crisp, modern lines. It’s a very clean design. Full disclosure: I just bought a 2017 GTI

i love the smooth roundness of a first gen TT. The mazda looks like it has way too many creases to collect road crud
